Willy Maywald is one of the best photographers of the 20th century. French fashion friends cherish his work as Christian Dior's photographer, while in Germany it is more the art-world enthusiasts who remember and love him. He created masterpieces of fashion photography and superb portraits of artists such as Picasso, Yves Klein, Valesca Gert and Nico.

Maywald always focused on the person he portrayed; he shrouded his object in mysterious light and created a state of uncertainty fluctuating between dream and reality. The gentleman of fashion photography bestowed a magical aura on mannequins of Dior, Fath and Balmain. On an equal footing with the great artists of the 20th century, he created iconic snapshots as well as unforgettable character studies.
